Art Jamming @ Arteastiq!

30 Nov

We finally decided to try our hands at doing something arty farty and booked a slot at Arteastiq with Joyce and Lionel! And a few days before going, we found a good deal online.. so we ended up paying $28 instead of the usual $48 for a free & easy art jamming session. Comes with a complimentary drink of our choice too! The art classes held there are $68.

We researched beforehand on our what we planned to draw. Lionel and Joyce picked out pictures from the art books they had there! With unlimited acrylic paint and our own set of brand new paintbrushes, we started our 3 hour session..

Them! Making quick progress…

All our final masterpieces!

The 3 hour session passed much quicker than we thought and we ended up rushing to finish our painting on time. There’s an option to bring back incomplete paintings for a continued session is at $5/hour  though.

Now that we’ve finished painting, what’s next?

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part I

27 Nov

Photobucket3half popcorns

We caught Breaking Dawn Part I the moment it opened on 24.11.11! As a short sum up, I felt it was a really slow show and I was bored at some points. To give them some credit, there were more laughter and tongue-in-cheek statements in this one than the previous 3 I watched.

Breaking Dawn to me was somewhat out of the norm from what I would expect from a Twilight series. Bella being impregnated after her marriage and then becoming ridiculously thin with sunken cheekbones and her eye sockets could be seen. I guess the CGI plus make-up and what not did a good job but she looked horrid. Haha..and then there were the werewolves talking to each other which was just too weird for me.

All in all, the show was so-so..was there even a climax? I barely recall..

Still, it was good watching just for Jacob.. and maybe Part II will be a little more exciting and less creepy!

Windsurfing 101

23 Nov

We impulsively signed up for a full day windsurfing class for SGD 85 and went for it over the weekend. Located at the far end of East Coast Park was Water Venture, which is part of PA.

The full day course was from 9am-5pm, and there were about 12 of us. Started off in a classroom, being briefed about the jargons – think: daggerboard, mast, boom and what not. We were briefed about our safety as well and how not to sail towards ships and get sucked into its propeller. Throw in some horror stories about windsurfers being trapped and we were scared before we even made it out to sea.

Our course book which was never read

We tried on simulator windsurfs on how to climb onboard, do some fancy turns and we headed to the sea! What we didnt know was that practicing on the simulator was a hundred times easier than doing in on sea. I had a good first try of trying to stand on the board, albeit drinking in too much salt-laden sea water when I tumbled unceremoniously into the water. My moment of glory lasted for 3 seconds.

M was a little more unfortunate. She fell once, and water gushed through all her orifices. She fell a couple more times and never learned her lesson of holding her breath or closing her eyes. Her series of misfortunes made her lose interest pretty quick..

We windsurfed for about an hour or more..I managed to successfully surf for like 10 seconds? Never made it past making a 180 degrees turn, so I had to slowly swim back to shore while dragging the board and sail.

Had a short lunch break at about 1pm..

and headed back to more windsurfing at about 2pm. The waves were way too choppy for us beginners to even start sailing, and we were pretty much drained out from the morning practice. And then the skies started turning dark and the lightning signal was sounded. So we headed in, and waited for a possibility for the weather to turn around. It didnt happen so we spent the remaining time keeping our sails, our boards. Washing them was seriously a chore, such a turn-off if I ever consider taking up this sport.

Anyway, a full day course earned us our Basic Windsurfing Course Certification. Now we can rent equipments and surf on our own! Then again, it’s not like we ever will, being such amateurs.

Was it exciting? It was definitely an experience. Good or bad, I can’t determine. It was fun to try it out, but it came with alot of other drawbacks like the dirtiness of the sport and the gruelling torture on our limbs and muscles. If we ever do try again, note to self: work on our arm strength at the gym first.

I’m a certified windsurfer now though!

We’re packing our bags!

15 Nov

After 6 months of working, we’re going to have a good holiday! Make that 2 actually 😀  I cant wait!! And they are both in December. Overkill, I know. But it’s the holiday season anyway!

And since her gruelling job is finally over, there’ll be a short break before starting on her new job..that’s where we’ll squeeze in our first trip!

Hong Kong
9 Dec – 12 Dec 2011

We’ll be heading to Hong Kong. Mainly to visit Sammiewham..we can’t wait!! 😀 Hopefully we can squeeze in abit of everything – eating, shopping, sightseeing, Macau! I have yet to find a hotel though..! 😡

25 Dec – 29 Dec 2011

And the long-awaited trip to Phuket! I almost started to believe that we were jinxed NEVER to visit Phuket. Our first trip was meant to be in April this year, which we forfeited our tickets because I had just started on my new job – something unforseen at the time of buying the tickets. Luckily for us, the tickets were barely $100.

This time, we almost didn’t make it again, cos of M’s job where she’ll be starting in mid December. We were planning to forfeit the tickets already. Thankfully, her job requires her to take block leave during the Christmas season just like me! So Phuket is still on!

Pristine beaches, here we come!

Ok I’m sure the beaches are probably not that pretty, but I hope it’ll be close?

Aspery Hotel booked! I hope it looks similar to the pictures.. since I took really long to decide on one. I especially need clean rooms and toilet.. I’m anal like that.

Can’t wait for December..meanwhile, I shall enjoy my November! More exciting activities to come..

12 Nov

So, while I was waiting for that girl to finish her dinner with her ex-colleague, I spent an hour at MPH’s history section, on a Friday night. As much as it sounds sad, I think I enjoyed my time there, without having her rush me out. I’m amazed at myself really, spending an hour at one section when there was only 1 shelf  which was dedicated for history/politics.

The Other Schindlers

Agnes Grunwald-Spier

After flipping through almost all the books that interested me there, I decided on this book. And it was also cos the store ran out of Schindler’s Ark which I really wanted that’s why I settled on this instead.

And because I still had about 2 more hours to kill, I headed to the quietest Starbucks at Citylink and plonked myself at a comfy corner and started reading. Green tea latte, cheese bagel, cheery christmas songs and a history book, what more could I ask for? My Friday night was well spent alone and I’m not complaining (:

here ends this ridiculously  meaningless post!

Our Movie Date!

5 Nov

in time

4 popcorns

We recently caught ‘In Time’ for our movie date! Our whole day was spent eating and relaxing, and this show made it all the better!

In Time had a fantastic cast! Main lead Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried (I would have preferred an alternative though), Olivia Wilde (as Timberlake’s mom) and and and Matthew Bomer (though he only had about 10 minutes airtime)!!

This movie chronicles a future whereby humans live till 25 (and look 25 forever), and they are given 1 year more before they die. Time is currency in this world, and to survive past 26, people have to earn ‘time’. Wages are paid in ‘time’, commodities are priced in terms of ‘time’ too (a cup of coffee costs 4 minutes). Their life clock is embedded neon in their hands and these ‘time’ are added or deducted when their hands are being scanned. Oh, and you can give or take ‘time’ away from people by holding their hands.

Enter Will Salas (Timberlake), a ghetto factory worker, earning barely enough ‘time’ to make it past day after day for him and his mother. Isn’t it scary to wake up everyday, not knowing if you can live past the next 24hours? I digress. Anyway, the story starts picking up when Will sees Henry Hamilton (Bomer) flashing his ‘time’ around in the bar, buying drinks for everyone cos he has more than a century on his clock. Time bandits called the Minutemen enters and try to rob Hamilton of his ‘time’. Will helps him escapes and finds out there is actually more than enough ‘time’ going around just that the rich in other zones are keeping to be immortal. Hamilton is tired of living (he is actually 105 years old), and gives Will all his ‘time’ and commits suicide.

Sadly, before Will can give his mother some of his ‘time’, she dies just because she had not enough ‘time’ to pay the bus fare. Will embarks on the journey to another zone, the rich and luxurious New Greenwich. He gambles, earns more ‘time’, buys a car, and enjoys luxury for a short while before the ‘Timekeepers’ (their version of the police force) from the Ghetto confiscates his ‘time’, thinking he murdered Hamilton to steal his time. He holds Sylvia (Seyfried) hostage, since she’s the daughter of a billionaire.

They embark on a journey together since all her ‘time’ was stolen too and she finally knows how it feels to literally live one day at a time. They steal a bank owned by her dad, face-offs with the Timekeepers and Minutemen, rob Sylvia’s dad of his treasure – a million years stored in a vault – to distribute to the poor

I felt the ending could have been better though! But it’s a show I could probably watch just one more time (:

Long weekend ahead to enjoy..Happy Hari Raya Haji!
